Troubleshooting DHCP servers

The DHCP server is stopped.
1. Verify the DHCP server has been authorized to operate.
2. Verify the Configuration is correct, for example no mistake on server IP address.
3. Verify the DHCP Server service is running.

The DHCP server is unable to provide service to clients.
1. Verify the DHCP server is run on a multihomed computer.
2. Verify Scopes or superscopes on the DHCP server have been configured or activated.
3. Verify the DHCP server and clients are in the same subnet. For remote client, you may setup RRAS or DHCP relay agent.
4. Verify the scope in use is not full and able to lease addresses to requesting clients.

Verify that there is no other DHCP server on the network.

I had a case where someone brought in and plugged in a wireless router to the cable plant, and connected through the WAN port to the local LAN. Chaos. You see this in University campus settings quite a bit.
