Transfer data without losing sharing and permissions

Postby chicagotech » Thu Aug 23, 2007 10:34 am

Q: We are planning to transfer data from windows 2000 server to windows 2003. We want to keep all permissions and sharing on the new server. How do you do that?

A: You may want to use robocopy to copy all files with their permissions. Then use regedit to export/import the sharing. To do that, please follow this steps:

1. run regedit.
2. Under HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver, right-click on Share and select Export.
3. Import it into the registry of the new server once all the files have been copied.

You can also use FSMT and backup to restore the file with permissions.
