Vista Wireless Connection Lost after screen saver

Postby Felix Yap » Sat Sep 01, 2007 5:01 pm

Hi all,

I am using Sony VAIO SZN with Vista 32 Bit Business Edition and Intel(R) Pro / Wireless 3945 ABG.

Previously when I was using my old laptop with SP Pro, I used to have my screen saver activated after the laptop is 5 minutes idle, and when I relogin I still have my internet connection.

Now with Vista, if I did the same (relogin after the screen saver activated), my internet connection is lost. I have tried to search for the solution, even try to call Microsoft Support Center in Indonesia, but sadly I did not have any solution yet.

So now what I do is de-activating the screes saver.

Can anybody help?

Cheers

Are you certain that there are no other "sleep" issues involved; that the screensaver is blameless?

Make sure you are current at Windows Update. In particular, you want the two reliablility updates from two weeks ago.

It would help to see if there is an entry in your Event Logs from Network Diagnostics. Look for event entries such as:
Event ID 1003 from source Microsoft-Windows-Dhcp-Client
EventI D 6100 from source Helper Class (RNWF MSM Helper Class)

If so, it would help if you could post the event details back to the Forum.

Lets rule out some things:

1. Download and apply this Hotfix:

The default gateway setting is lost when you wake a Windows Vista-based computer from sleep
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933872/en-us

2. Issues with the Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG and 4965AGN Network Adapter are Intel problems and not Vista in my opinion. You have to fiddle:

3. Please make both registry edits described in this MS KB article:

Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/928233

Reboot.

Releated to this change, do a compatability test of your wireless router:

Microsoft Internet Gateway Device Connection Test Utility
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/using/ ... fault.mspx

4. Consider setting a static IP for your wireless adapter.

Dear Bill, thank you very much for your prompt reply.

To answer your question about the "sleep" issue, I am almost sure that the problem that I am facing has nothing to do with the sleep issue, because I set the sleep option to "never" whenever the laptop is plugged in.

I will try you suggestions and I'll come back to you and this forum with report of the result.

Cheers

Dear Bill,

As per your suggestion, I have copy the DHCP client event log when I tried to re-login after my screen saver activated. As you can see, my laptop was not able to renew its address from the network (from the DHCP Server) for the Network Card.

As additional info, when I relogin by typing my password, the lost of wireless connection problem does happen but sometimes (not always, perhaps around 60% - 70% of the occasions) the laptop manages to reconnect with wireless connection within 2 or 3 minutes.
But when I re-login by using finger print reader, the wireless connection is lost until I do a "network diagnose & repair" or reboot the laptop.

Dear Bill and everybody else who might face the same problem with me.

I did what Bill suggested, I installed the program from Knowledge Base below.

The default gateway setting is lost when you wake a Windows Vista-based computer from sleep
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933872/en-us

After installing the update and rebooting the laptop, now this is my laptop condition.
My laptop still lost it wireless connection after it resumes from screen saver, but now it can re-connect at about 30 second. Of course this is not perfect but it has been improved compared to its previous condition.

I am still looking for the ultimate solution for this wireless problem since I will face problem when I download from websites that do not support downloading resume.

Thank you so much Bill, if you have better solution I will appreciate it very much.
Thanks again.

Cheers

Thank you for the feedback.

When my Vista laptop came, it didn't work with the wireless. I fixed it by installing a new wireless NIC driver dated 2//##/207 from Intel web site. Yesterday. it doesn't work again. I searched and download another Intel driver date 3/##/2007. that fixed the problem. You may check if there is a new driver for the NIC. Also this link may help too,

Hello,

I post this information I got on internet because it was hard to solve
that problem.

Model computer: Sony VAIO VGN-N21E/W SW1 (Swiss Model)

Operating system: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium

Wireless card: LAN-Express

Access Point: SonicWall

Problem: The problem come from the new tcp/ip stack integrated in
Vista.. I couldn't get any IP from a DHCP server. I could see the
Access Point and connect my laptop on it but never get any IP from my
DHCP server.

How to solve: You have to modify a key in the registry to make your
Vista able to get an IP from your DHCP server.

1. Click the Start button.
2. Select All Programs > Accessories.
3. Right click Command Prompt and click Run as administrator.
4. Type regedit.exe and press enter.
5. Go to the following location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM
\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
6. Right click this entry and select New Dword.
7. Rename the new entry ArpRetryCount (leave it set to 0 by
default).
8. Restart the computer.
9. Reassociate with the SonicWALL. You should notice a successful
connection.

Hope it can help people.
