Since this is external drive, you may need to take owner over first. This link may help.

Not Able to READ or Write to ...The desktop has an external hard drive connected by USB. From the laptop I can see and change ... You may need totake ove the ownership. This lnk may help, ...

when attempting to access an external, I get an error message
"\\Desktop|external is not accessible. You might not have permission to use
this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out
if you have access permissions. Not enough server storage is available to
process this command."

This post mentioned that modifying registry fixed similar issue. You may try it and please post back with the result.

Access Is Denied when Vista Accesses Network Share
I was able to fix this issue by editing the registry by replacing the ip address of the server for the server name.
