Windows 8 RTM unable to connect to enterprise wifi

Postby guest » Sun Oct 28, 2012 11:48 am

The connection is believed to be wpa2-enterprise.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

1. it used to work with Windows 7 (in fact, I tried wipe out the OS and re-install Windows 7 to make sure I have the correct access point password, and Windows 7 connect to wireless without problem).

2. there are several threads on this, but some of them are during consumer release timeframe. Are other people encountering this issue for RTM like I am?

3. I tried the suggestions in other places, like manually create the connection and "uncheck verify the server's identity by validating the certificate", but it still does not work.

In particualr, this is the steps I tried (from http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... 0f5?page=2)
1.Go to Network and Sharing Center
2.Set up a new connection or network
3.Manually connect to a wireless network
4.Enter SSID and choose WPA2-Enterprise (click next)
5.Click Change connection settings
6.Security Tab
7.Click 'Settings'
8.***********Uncheck 'Verify the server's identity by validating the certificate' (click OK)
9.Advanced Settings
10.Check 'Specify authentication mode'
11.Select 'User authentication'
12.Click 'Saved credentials'
13.User name = DOMAIN\username
14.Password = yourpassword

thanks for answering. No, i do not see "Windows can't verify the server's identity" message. although I vaguely remember seeing message similar to that when I try to connect using Windows 7. But when I try to setup wireless connection on Windows 8, I did not see that message.

thank you.

If the wireless hardware is Cisco, it could be that Cisco is the issue. If so, there appears to be two options.

1.Update the Cisco Controller code to a fixed version.

2.Downgrade to a pre-Windows 8 wireless NIC driver on the client device -

I solved my problem on an ASUS EP121 Tablet by installing a specific driver. Note that the standard Microsoft driver doesn't work. The driver, for an Atheros AR9002WB-1NG Wireless Network Adapter reqquried the Artheros driver version 9.2.0.419 to work. Other drivers will not load automatically, so I had to remove the driver and install it manually. Once this driver was installed, the device would automatically connect to my enterprise network where every mobile device has a certificate that allows it to connect. In the wireless connection, there is a link in the form that asks to use a certificate. That link will work with this driver. Note that when I had upgraded the software thru Windows Update, the wireless driver was also updated. This removed my capacity to connect to the enterprise network (it did not affect a home network). When I rolled back the update and installed the old driver, erverything was back to normal.

Please double check the settings or create the wireless connection manually.

In 802.1x settings, please select “Specify authentication mode” and choose "User authentication" to have a try.

Hope this helps.

I installed the following driver from the Samsung support site:

Option Wireless LAN Driver (Driver) (ver.9.2.0.225) Please referece the below install steps.
Click the attached file and press ''Save'' button. Then press ''Browse...'' button and select the place where you want to save the selected file. After downloading the file, find the downloaded file and right_click on the file. On pop_up menu, select ''Extract All...'' option. On ''Extraction Wizard'', press ''Next'' button and press ''Browse...'' button. Select a folder to extract file and press ''Next'' again. After the file has been sucessfully extracted, see the extracted files. Run ''Setup.exe'' file or ''setup.exe'' file in the folder. -This driver may not be appropriate depending on the computer model.

This fixes the issues for me. For reference, I chose "Driver Only" in the setup, I did not install any of the tools.

Well I found a fix, if you go to device manager and uninstall your wireless network card and then reinstall it (should only take about 20 seconds) it will reset your network profiles, allowing you to recreate one that may be setup incorrectly. Hope this helps.

Not an ideal solution, but the logic behind the idea appears sound.. note you will likely need to re-connect your Windows 8 setup to all the other hot spots around the city that you have already configured, as the above step will likely clear the lot.

Yep, I just found that too and it worked! Note that some people said that didn't work for them, which seems strange. I uninstalled the wireless network card, then turned the computer completely off and left it off for a while. When I rebooted, I checked Control Panel and the Wireless network card was installed. Then I put the first screen of network details in and made sure the ""Start this connection automatically" check box was not ticked. Now I can access the security screen.

The problem might also have been that I put the wrong details into the first screen because I got them off my mobile phone info - IOW, I wrongly used 802.x instead of WPA2-enterprise.

Anyway, now I've got to get the correct security details and put them in. Then I think W8 should work on the Uni network.

If there is no Windows 8 driver available, you may try to download latest Windows 7 driver.
