Multihomed Vista may receive "Unidentified network"

Postby chicagotech » Tue Sep 11, 2007 11:48 pm

The multihomed Vista may receive "Unidentified network" message if it is configured incorrectly. Try to assign 192.168.1.x Ip to both 1GB LAN and make sure they can ping each other. Otherwise check this search result.

Vista issuesthe Vista laptop has limited connectivity to "Unidentified network". The XP desktop says that the network cable isn't even plugged in… ...

I am running 2 new Vista Ultimate 32 bit machines. One has a Intel 985BX2
motherboard with onboard 1 Gb LAN. The other an Asus P5K Deluxe mothboard
with Realtek and Marvel 1GB LANs.

Both are connected to a Netgear DG834GT wirless router which has the
internet connection. I am trying to also connect the machines by 1Gb LAN to
allow fast media copies/steaming. Over the wireless it starts copying well
but slows up.

When I plug in a crossover cable I get "Unidentified network". If I disable
wireless the machines cannot see each other. I have set this 1Gb connection
on both to "private". I have also merged locations but not bridged the
connections.

As per other threads I have tried disabling the IPv6 but it did not work.
The ipconfig output from both is below.

Can anybody help how to get these to work?
Also when working how to I control whether traffic is over the 1gb or the
wireless?

The multihomed Vista may receive "Unidentified network" message if it is configured incorrectly. In your case, I don't see the default gateway or it is 0.0.0.0. I would disable the ICS and setup just one connection to make sure it works.

These links may help too.

I have tried every suggestion on this and other tech net sites with zero
results.

I bought an HP Pavilion three weeks ago and righ out of the box, the
on-board NIC (Intel Pro-100) shows up as "Unidentified Network (Public
Network)" I can change it to Private, but cannot rename it. It reverts back
to public on a reboot. ICS does not work well if the internal netwrok is a
public network. After any reboot, I have to reset the network to "Private"

- I have downloaded updated drivers for the NIC. Didn't work.
- I have disabled IPv6 (Doesn't appear to work anyway - system would give
itself an internal private adress and the toredo tunnel doesn't show up.)
Didn't work.
- Turned off Windows firewall, Didn't work.
-- Turned it back on. didn't work
- Internal NIC will not accept a default gateway because the IP address
assigned to it by ICS is the gateway.
- Disabled on-board NIC and inserted a separate NIC (Realtek 8139) Driver
dated July 2007.
- On-board wireless is disabled.

Bob,

Thanks for your help. I reactivated the (onboard) IntelPro 100+ into the
systems and it is working great. Don't know why it wouldn't before, maybe
just had to be reinitialized. This time it did install a different driver
than the one it came with.

I now have my Private Network that says HOME and it stays on restart.

Unidentified network

Postby alexdnatel » Fri Jan 04, 2008 2:04 pm

I suffer the same fate with my VISTA Home premium.I travel a lot and I connect usually to hotel wireless network and one thing I noticed that the problem is selective.Sometimes I connect instantly, with other hotel wifi none at all.I am now connected to one of hotel wifi and as of writing, I'm can browse the net but the tray icon is telling me "Access:Local only"

Well I got one workaround when I get stuck with "unidentified networks". From the Network sharing center tab click on Manage Network connection, right click on your wireless adaptor. click on disable, wait for a few seconds and put it enable again. The Network will restart the connection.

I have the same issues. I travel a lot and access to different wireless. In some places it may work but others. My solution is removing IPv6 from the Vista completely following this how to.
