Troubleshooting Windows 10 black screen issue

Postby guest » Mon Nov 07, 2016 11:11 pm

Quoted from Microsoft:

If your PC experiences a black screen after signing in to Windows 10, try the following steps:

Unplug your external devices

Sometimes, your PC’s external devices can be the cause of problems. Try unplugging all your devices, and then plugging them in one at a time.

If that worked, but one of your devices causes your display to go black when you plug it back in, unplug your devices again, plug them in one at a time—except the device causing the problem—and restart your PC. If you can determine which device is causing the problem, contact your device manufacturer for support.

Enter Safe Mode

If unplugging external devices doesn't fix the problem, start your PC in Safe Mode and then try the following troubleshooting steps below.

1.Restart your PC. When you reach the sign-in screen, hold the Shift key and select the Power button, and then select Restart.
2.After your PC restarts, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup settings > Restart. After your PC restarts, you should see a number of options. Press 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with networking.

Reinstall your display adapter driver

Once your PC is in Safe Mode, reinstall your display adapter driver.

1.Type device manager into the search box on the taskbar, and then select Device Manager.
2.Expand Display adapter.
3.Right-click the display adapter and select Uninstall > OK.
4.Restart your PC.

Shut down the RunOnce processes

There might be a problem with one or more RunOnce processes. If you're in Safe Mode and want to shut them down:

1.Right-click Start  and select Task Manager.
2.Check both the Processes tab and Services tab—look for any instances of RunOnce32.exe or RunOnce.exe. If you find any that are running:
•In Processes, select the item, and select End task.
•In Services, right-click the item, and select Stop.
3.Restart your PC.

Below is a Microsoft Knoledge Base entry from April of this year.

httpw://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3055414

"The lock screen in Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 10061 might appear as a black screen with a mouse cursor
Symptoms

When you sign out of Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 10061 and return to the lock screen, you might see only a black screen with a responsive mouse cursor. Pressing the Alt+Tab keys or the Ctrl+Alt+Del keys has no visible effect.
Workaround

If you are experiencing this issue, follow these steps to sign into Windows:

At the black screen, press the Ctrl key once on an attached physical keyboard. (You won’t see any visible change, but pressing the Ctrl key will place the cursor in the password box that you’re currently not able to see.)

Now type the password of the user that just signed out and press Enter. This will sign you back into Windows and the desktop will appear.

If you failed to sign in because you mistyped the password, press Enter once more. Then retype the password and press Enter." ...

PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU ARE INSTALLING WINDOWS 10. AFTER ENTERING YOUR PASSWORD, THE CURSOR SHOULD VANISH FOR SEVERAL MINUTES WHILE WINDOWS COMPLETES THE INSTALL SETUP. MY COMPUTER, A FAST ALIENWARE, TOOK ABOUT FIVE MINUTES TO COMPLETE THE SETUP AND THEN THE WINDOWS 10 DESKTOP APPEARED.

It could be the Fast Startup issue

This feature only works when you do a SHUTDOWN and then Boot.

It doesn't effect a RESTART.

To turn it off or on...

Go to Control panel...Power Options, and select Choose What the Power Buttons Do on the left.

Then select Change Settings That are Currently Unavailable near the top center of screen...

Lower down on the window, uncheck Fast Startup.

This shouldn't effect your problem, but it might..

I would suggest you to try the following methods and check if that resolves the issue.

Method 1:

Start your computer in safe mode.

I suggest you to restart the computer in safe mode with networking and check if the issue persists. Refer to the steps below:
1. Boot from your Windows 10 installation Media
2. Select your language preferences, and click on Next
3. Click on Repair your computer at the bottom
4. Click on Troubleshoot
5. Click on Advanced options
6. Click on Startup Settings
7. Click on Restart
8. Select Safe mode with Networking

If you could boot in safe mode without any issue then try to update or remove video driver.

Please refer the Wiki Article created by Andre Da Costa (MVP, Community Moderator & Wiki Author).

I've managed to delete the videocard driver (downloaded from AMD website). The problem has been solved since, no blackscreens are produced anymore.

The driver was replaced automatically by 'Windows Basic display driver', but it doesn't provide full support.

Playing videogames, for example, are not possible using this basic driver and everything seems to 'hang more' when dragging things around, it misses the right compability.

Searching Windows update for drivers does not come up with anything.

Basically the blackscreen was fixed by removing the driver, but the default windows driver does not provide full support as it goes very slow on demanding applications.

If you get into the blackscreen state again can you hit the key combination "ctrl+Windows key+B" at the same time. This will attempt to fix the issue but it may not. It will send us more information though to help narrow down the problem. Also if you can file an issue with the Windows Feedback App under hardware, drivers, devices\display that can help us get some logs.

I would recommend to turn off the 'quick startup' option. That fixed the returning black screen for me.

Like stated by slance310 in this topic, you can turn off quick startup by going to control panel -> Power options -> Choose what the power button does (on the left side) -> Select 'change settings that are currently unavailable' -> uncheck fast startup.

Then reboot the computer and see wether that provides the solution or not.

This solution (turning off "Fast Start" worked for me. Downside is the boot up time is quite long. Hope MS fixes this soon.

To get control pane to disable fast restart, When do you get the black screen... before or after Login ?

You might try CTRL+ALT+DEL which MIGHT bring up a menu with Taskmanager...

If so, you can click on FILE... Run New Task, or something similar, type Control.exe, and hit enter...

Even with a black screen, you may be able to get a few windows to be visable...

Another thing you can try to plug an external monitor and see maybe display comes there. Then install the latest driver.
