Can't see local computers

Postby em_CT » Thu Dec 06, 2007 5:06 pm

Hi all, I am new here and maybe some one can help me before I trash the software. I am at this for about 3 days and I am at the end of my wits.

From the entire network, three XP's, I can see all computers, but not from this one, Vista Premium.

This is my ipconfig /all from this computer:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix: hsd1.XX.comcast.net.
Description: Intel(R) 82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection
Physical Address: 00-19-D1-XX-XX-XX
DHCP Enabled: Yes
IPv4 IP Address: 192.168.1.XXX
IPv4 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Lease Obtained: Wednesday, December 05, 2007 9:17:07 AM
Lease Expires: Thursday, December 06, 2007 9:17:06 AM
IPv4 Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
IPv4 DHCP Server: 192.168.1.1
IPv4 DNS Servers: 68.87.71.226, 68.87.73.242
IPv4 WINS Server:
NetBIOS over Tcpip Enabled: No

The only difference I see is that NetBIOS not being enabled and for the life of me, I can't turn it on. I tried all the standard fare, like in the WINS section checking the enable bottom.
Is there a way to do it manually in the Registry?

I use WORKGROUP for the whole network. This is a dual boot computer and when I go back to XP, the network works great and yes, the discovery is on.

I ran a program from Linksys (router maker) called EasyLink Adviser and
it sees all the computers on the net.

It is Vista and I am ready to re-install or dump it all together, please help before I loose my mind.

Thanks

NetBIOS over TCP/IP could be the problem. However, first thing is first. Can you ping the Vista y IP?

Can other XP ping each other? If yes, i would check windows firewall or third party security software on the Vista. Or check this link;

Vista cannot access others

I will check your links again.

I can ping from the VP all computers on the net.

I personally still think the problem lies with NetBIOS and inability to turn it on.

Sorry, I had ZoneAlarm installed and when I disabled it I could ping all computers in all direction.

Thank you for the feedback.

FYI, NetBIOS over TCP/IP is for Windows name resolution. If you can't ping IP, it is not thing to do with NetIOS over TCP/IP.

Please post back if you have other issues.

I really have not solved anything. From VU I see my laptop with HP and router, nothing else. I don't see my XP or networked drive.
From my laptop with HP I see all and connect to all.
From my XP I see and connect to all except the VU.
At this stage all I really want is to be able to see my whole network.

Assuming you can ping each other, but not browse from the network, that could be a NetBIOS over TCP/IP issue. Can I also assume you have tried to enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP, but it doesn't take it. Can you post the result of the ipconfig .all here?

NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Disabled

In addition, your firewall settings cannot block UPnP, and cannot block SSDP discovery.
All clients need Netbios over TCP/IP enabled (do not use Default settings, use the middle choice to force this state as active.) Enable UPnP. Enable SSDP.

All XP clients must be at Service Pack 2.
All XP clients need the LLTD Discovery supplement: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... F485FA34EA

Thanks Bill for the response.

I know what my problem is, NetBios, I just can't get it enabled. The settings in Local Area Connections I have set manually. but when run ipconfig /all I still get the above results.

I think I need to do it set it in the Registry, I just don't know how.

Do you receive "Failed to access NetBT driver - NetBT may not be loaded" error if you using nbtstat -n? Or check this post.

That lead did not pan out, all still the same.

I think I will reinstall or repair if there is such a think.

Well, I tried to "update", there is no repair, did not work. Apparently, there are other problems with programs I brought over from XP that don't work in Vista.
