Need to get VPN's under Vista working....

Postby Alpine » Sat Dec 08, 2007 11:02 am

Hello Everyone, ALL of my VPN's under Vista are suddenly NOT working. I have a half dozen VPN connections which were ALL working fine over the last 6 months. There were no new updates or changes that I am aware of to my installation.

I have been ALL over the net and this forum has had the most useable information regarding this topic and I am hoping someone can help me from here.

I was ONLY getting the 20227 error with 0, then during my hunting I revisted Windows Updates and found an update for my Atheros Wireless Network, downloaded/installed/rebooted/re tried my VPNS and the errors changed to 20227 with 809.

This only happened one time, then it reverted back to 20227 with 0.

As I do have multiple connection types (wired, wireless, cellular), and locations I connect from I did use the SPECIFIC Windows update mentioned here, Update for Windows Vista (KB930163),

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en

No change/help.

As I mentioned here before, all of these connections were working fine until a few days ago, and now no matter what I do, change, delete, recreate, enable, disable, etc..etc none of them work, and I even created NEW VPN connections to servers I don't need and there was no change there.

Where do I go now? This is heading in the direction of my needing to wipe the system out and start over again which is always the last/worst solution to something but if that is what it's going to take I guess I will have to go forward with that.

Please advise, and thanks for anything/everything in advance!

Do you receive errors in the VPN server event viewer? Also try to start the Vista with clean booting and then try the VPN. Please post back with the result.

Thank you for the response, I am actually not able to work with my notebook @ the moment
so I can't actually go through any additional steps, but I will later this evening.

I have a feeling that the connections aren't even being made to the server so I don't know if I
am going to have anything to see server-side.

Thanks again and I will get back when I have more info.

Alright,

Got on the noteook, tried to VPN to one of the servers; same error/problem.

RDPd into the server, checked the event viewer & IIS logs, nothing.

Cleared all logs, and tried to VPN again, same result.

The VPN connection isn't registering on the server at all.

Now what?

Based on Microsoft article, the problems that might cause the failure are divided into the following categories:

• Hardware issues

• Network connectivity

• VPN tunnel settings

• IPsec security associations

• PPP user authentication and negotiation issues

Can you use VPN tools to check the ports status?

The Event Error "20227" is added when the VPN connection fails to established. The issue
usually occurs when user switched locations to another location, we suspect
that the behavior that VPN connection got deleted unexpectedly occurs due
to the failure of establishing the VPN connection on the new location. This
occurs normally due to the Router settings on the new location which are
not compatible with Vista VPN, or the relevant system components are
corrupt unexpectedly by some third party software.

We had a similar case. The VPN client is Windows 7 and Server is windows 2008. When user establish the VPN at home it works. If he connect to his school wireless, he will receive ths message:
CoId={7697E712-DB86-4B34-B470-BFD66F15D276}: The user windows7\blin dialed a connection named GVPN which has failed. The error code returned on failure is 806.

The proble is the school wireless blocks the GRE.

When user establish the VPN at home it works. If he connect to his school wireless,

A connection between the VPN server and the VPN client x.x.x.x has been established, but the VPN connection cannot be completed. The most common cause for this is that a firewall or router between the VPN server and the VPN client is not configured to allow Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) packets (protocol 47).

Re: Vista VPN receives Event ID 20227 with failure 0

We just have a case like this one. The VPN server Enet Viewer doesn't show any error. In the VPN client, it shows Event ID 20227 - CoId={D7158331-73AE-43FB-82AB-194251E675F1}: The user HYPER-V-LT\blin dialed a connection named WinVPN2 which has failed. The error code returned on failure is 0.

In the VPN server, the RRAS display the client still conencts to the VPN server. You can't disconnect the client conenction from RRAS or stop the RRAS. The only solution we have is reboot the VPN server.
