Can't access Vista host -ipc$ share problem?

Postby TRASHBIZ » Tue Dec 18, 2007 5:57 pm

Problem: I have a small network with a new Vista Business, 2 W2K, an XP and a W98. The Vista has a shared drive that is named 'f'. The other computers have the 'f' drive mapped and all but the W98 have no trouble accessing it. However, every time I try the W98 I get a request for a password. We use the same username and password for all the computers and none of the rest have this problem.

Also, when the password request pops up the Vista computer name has 'ipc$' added to the end of the pathname. I have changed the Network Security LAN Manager Authentication Level to 'Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session if negotiated' as well as all of the other fixes that I have found, but none have worked.

In addition, before the Vista was added, the shared 'f' drive was located on the XP and everything worked just fine.

Please help!

I have already disabled the password protection -get the same result either way. In addition, the vista can access a shared file on the w98 w/o any problem.

If you have configured the Network Security LAN Manager Authentication Level and created the same user in all computers, you may try to disable "password protected sharing" on Vista. Please post back with the result.

Disabling UAC on Vista did not help. Any other ideas?

Please leave UAC alone, as it is not a factor.
Nor is IPv6 a factor.

You need to add the Active Directory Client Extensions for Win9x, and ME clients in order to support NTLM v.2 : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239869
