Solved: Vista print Error 0x00000866

Postby chicagotech » Wed Aug 08, 2007 12:45 pm

Situation: Vista receives print Error 0x00000866

Resolution: 1. Add a Local Printer and then create a new port pointing to the shared printer.
2. Map the shared printer to local printer port.

From a DOS prompt (Type command in the "start search" section of the start menu) type this:

net use LPT# \\server\printer /persistent:yes

for me this was

net use LPT1 \\hppav\BROTHER_1240 / persistent:yes

substituting for #, server, and printer as appropriate for your network.

Thank you for the sharing your experience with us. Adding the printer as local printer and then mapping it as network printer does fix a lot printer issues.

Hi there,

I had a similar problem, and here's how I worked around/fixed it. I
have a Linksys wireless router, and a Netgear Print Server that links
my laser printer to the network without having to run a separate
computer just for printing. My Vista Business could never find it
either.

What I did was assign my Print Server an IP of 192.168.1.102, and
then I ran the 'Add Printer' wizard. I ran it by selecting the button
that says my printer is not listed, then chose the 3rd option, 'Add
printer by using a TCP/IP address or hostname', and inserted the TCP/
IP address.

Every time I browsed for the printer, the search timed out without
finding it. This is kind of a blind way of doing it, but when I
printed a .pdf file, sure enough, it did print. On your desktop, click
start/printers & faxes, and right click your printer, and select
properties. Click the Ports tab and see what port it is installed on.

You can either use the IP address if it is on a TCP/IP port, or if
it's on a local port, you can use the UNC address, which would look
like this: "\\Desktopcomputername\printer name" except for the
quotes.

If you have successfully printed to this printer over your network
in the past you should be all set. If not, you need to be sure the
printer is shared on the desktop.

Give it a shot, it should work.

1. Most cases, LTP1 should work.
2. to find the out the server name and printer name, on the computerconnecting to the printer run this command: net share. You also use the ip address, for example: net use LPT1 \\192.168.0.1\Casa_sandro.

Suggested idea (add printer port + "net use") ALMOST works...

After a reboot, (even with "persistent") the printer goes "offline" PERMANENTLY and will not reset until deleted and readded after each reboot... MAJOR ANNOYANCE!

Config: Windows 7 (RTM-Build 7600) accessing an Epson 850 shared on a WIN98 box...

Additional info: After reboot, get error "Cannot reconnect to all network devices" and printer goes offline permanently until removed and readded!

Any more ideas?

OK... I did further "trial & error" testing and found a workaround...

1) Since the "cannot reconnect all network devices" apparently was caused by the "persistent" option in the "net use" command, and that rendered the "work offline" attribute to "get stuck" forcing the printer to be removed and re-added, I dropped that piece of the puzzle...

2) I added the printer to a "phantom" LPT port that is not on the box (LPT2) so as not to interfere with the "real" (but currently unused) LPT1

3) I used the "net use" command to map the new port to the network share but did NOT use the "persistent" option...

4) All is well!

Note: Another piece of the puzzle is that the WIN7 box is on a wireless connection... I suspect (but have not verified) that this is a boot "sequence" error, i.e. when using "persistent" it attempt to "reconnect" the printer prior to the wireless connection being established, thus rendering the printer permanently offline... By waiting until after boot and THEN using "net use" it appears to be making the connection just fine and alleviating the more time consuming process of deleting/adding the printer after each reboot!

I suspect that others that had success with the "persistent" option were using a network connection that was established at an earier point in the boot sequence.
