Vista: Ping issues

Postby chicagotech » Tue Feb 20, 2007 1:02 pm

When trroubleshooting connection between windows' networking, you may want to use ping command. The following are some issues with ping.

1. Can't ping remote computer IP: make sure the Allow incoming echo request is enabled in the Windows Firewall (under ICMP tab).

2. Can't pimg even if the Windows firewall is turned off or the Allow incoming echo request is enabled, make sure no other security software blocks the ping.

3. If you are sure you don't have firewall or security software blocks the ping, check the TCP/IP settings and make all computers are in the same subnet.

4. If you can ping the Ip but not hostname, make sure you enable the NetBIOS over TCP/IP if you have workgroup network, or check the DNS or WINS settings if you have a domain network.

5. If you can't ping a computer over VPN or WAN and firewall is not issue, you may check the routing table.
