you want to migrate the WSS 3.0 server from one server to another.

In your reply, you mentioned that the initial try that your IT conducted was messed up after renaming the computer name of the new member server. I'd like to let you know that after renaming the computer name of
the WSS 3.0 server, there are some other things we need to do. I'm including a relevant TechNet article below for your references.

Rename a stand-alone server (Windows SharePoint Services)

In regards to migrate the WSS 3.0 server from one server to another, I suggest you refer to the following technical articles:

Migrate Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 by using built-in tools (There are two methods described in this article. It is recommended to choose the Central Administration method.)
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/libr ... 88664.aspx

Note: Please do not backup the configuration database on the source WSS 3.0 server.

Since you need to migrate the standalone installation WSS 3.0 server to a server farm mode WSS 3.0 server with a backend centralized SQL Server, please also refer to the following article to prepare the server
farm mode WSS on the target server.

Install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 for a server farm environment
