Windows 2008 ERROR: location for backup is a critical volume

Postby chicagotech » Tue Sep 16, 2008 9:47 pm

Q: If I try "wbadmin start systemstatebackup -backupTarget:c:", I receive "ERROR - The location for backup is a critical volume".

If I try "wbadmin start systemstatebackup -backupTarget:c:\temp" (I do have c:\temp folder), I receive his error: "ERROR - Specified backup location could not be found".

How do I fix the problem?

A: This is the expected result. By default, Windows server 2008 blocks backup
to a critical volume for the following reasons:

---No other user or application can maintain shadow copies on the target
volume.
---The target volume must not contain any shadow copies prior to starting
the backup.
---Volume level backups and system state backups cannot be located on the
same volume.

Suggestion:
==================================
you can enable backup to a critical volume as follows:
======
1. Open the Registry Editor.
2. Navigate to the following registry key and change the value as shown
below:

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wbengine\SystemStateBackup\

AllowSSBToAnyVolume
Type: DWORD
Value: 0 = Do not allow (default); Non-zero (1) = Allow

Note: The SystemStateBackup key and the AllowSSBToAnyVolume value do not
exist by default; they must be added manually.

By the way, the log is located here: 'C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsServerBackup\SystemStateBackup 24-09-2008 19-44-20.log'

The systemstate backup is located here: C:\WindowsImageBackup\Servername\SystemStateBackup\Backup 2008-09-25 ######.
