Differences between NLB and Cluster

Postby guest » Wed Nov 19, 2008 11:17 pm

First of all, please understand that NLB and Cluster is totally different.
NLB is for load balance and mostly applied to web based application,
Cluster is for application failover which is mostly apply to application
redundancy.

The Microsoft Cluster service provides the customer with high availability
and minimizes the effects of hardware failure by having a standby server
ready to take over if the primary server fails. Download the attached
document for more information about the Microsoft Cluster service (MS
Cluster Server) and test settings and results.

NLB is most commonly used for large web farms. MSCS, on the other hand, is meant for applications where you need to maintain "state" - in other words, you have data on the back-end: SQL and Exchange are good examples.
