Multihomed WinXP computer in a P2P LAN & related problem

Postby devindersingh » Tue Dec 12, 2006 12:17 pm

Hi,

For physical layout reasons, I was forced to setup a desktop as a Multihomed PC running XP. Here is my setup:

3 Laptops and 1 Desktop(serves as a file server) running XP Pro, all connected wirelessly to a USRobotics router. There is a USRobotics range extender installed too.
All the machines have static IP addresses (192.168.2.X), router(192.168.2.1) A RICOH-multifunction is connected to the Ethernet port on the desktop(192.168.3.100)

When the network was first setup this way, it would stop responding after a few hours. The laptops would show as being connected, but could not access the Internet or shared docs(on desktop) or print to multifunction. An article on the Internet suggested that the Multihomed computer should not have the Browser service running or should not maintain the master Browser server list. I have turned the service off on all the computers, and now the network keeps working for a few days, before it stops responding. I don’t see any events in the event log pertaining to the network problem.

Is this a well-known issue with multihomed Computers? What is really going on? How can this be resolved? Is it a NETBIOS issue? should I use LMHOSTS file? :?

Please advise.

Thanks

It could be name resolution issue or routing issue. Why do you use LMHOSTS? Can you ping the multihomed computer by IP when you have the problem? Posting the result of ipconfig /all on the multihomed computer here may help.

I am not using LMHOSTS file. On another article's suggestion, I have disabled NETBIOS over TCP/IP on the LAN port to which the Multifunction is connected. The network has been running fine for 2 days now.

Multihomed computer may have a name resolution or computer browse issue if the settings incorrect. Posting the result of ipconfig /all here may help. These links may help,

Have got Home Premium installed with 2 network cards, Internet (public) and
Local (private)

Browsing and network completely fine on my Internet connection, I stream
video and everything just fine.

On my Local Connection, everything used to work fine when I first installed
it but now I struggle with everything (possibly after some update?), my PC
sitting next to it, sometimes works sometimes doesn't, very intermittent, web
browsing the same, same with streaming, what figures?
Even tried upgrading the memory, no luck, rembooting makes no difference.

Any answers to this?
I've tried the two vista updates for performance and reliability, no change,
damn
