VPN SITE TO SITE

Postby jeffuk123 » Wed Dec 13, 2006 6:10 pm

Hello to all,

This probably sounds a very vague question, but what would be the recommended way to setup a site-to-site VPN, with a windows 2003 server located at each site?

Would a router with VPN capability be best or using RRAS on each server, or both?

From limited past experience I have used RRAS on a Windows 2003 Server at one site, and a couple of clients at another site connecting to the remote server via the built in Windows XP VPN. This has always worked well.

Now I have to connect two sites with a server at each site via VPN. Is it as simple as just installing a server at each site and using RRAS as mentioned above. This seems too straightforward and I feel it can't be so.

If I was to use a router with VPN capability let's say a netgear DG834PN, apart from configuring the router for internet access as normal, what other configurations do I need to do on the router, apart from opening the appropriate VPN ports?

Please help!

Thanks to all
Jeff

Hi Jeff,

1. If it is peer to server or PPTP VPN, it is better to setup Windows RRAS.

2. If it is site to site VPN, that is depends. Router to router VPN may be easy to setup. however, Windows Site to site VPN can give you some benefits, for example, name resolution and authentication.

Many thanks for your reply.

This is a great site. Are there any articles on how to configure a site-to-site VPN.

Many thanks,
Jeff
