Volume Shadow copy operation failed for backup volumes

Issue:

====

Windows Backup on a Windows Server 2008 computer with Hyper-V fails with the error 521: “Volume Shadow copy operation failed for backup volumes with following error code '2155348129'”.

Assessment:

====

1. Checked the following items first:

a. Ensured the following key exists and value is added:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT \CurrentVersion\WindowsServerBackup\Application Support\{66841CD4-6DED-4F4B-8F17-FD23F8DDC3DE}

Name: Application Identifier

Type: REG_SZ

Value: Hyper-V

b. Checked the virtual machines and make sure Integration Services is installed on both of them.

c. Ensured all volumes where VM related files are selected when performing Windows Server Backup.

Windows Backup still failed and Backupexec did not work either.

2. Seemed to be VSS related. Checked SP2 and updates listed for Hyper-V had been installed.

3. Ran “vssadmin list writers” and “vssadmin list providers” to check VSS components and found Hyper-V VSS Writer failed.

Writer name: 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer'

Writer Id: {66841cd4-6ded-4f4b-8f17-fd23f8ddc3de}

Writer Instance Id: {028380db-27f0-4da9-a392-2c2b197dfeba}

State: [8] Failed

Last error: Retryable error

Solution:

Checked the version of swprv.dll on the server and found that it was lower than the version described in KB971394. After applying the update, the issue was resolved.

A backup of virtual machines fails when you use the Hyper-V VSS writer to back up virtual machines concurrently on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008
