System error 1231 has occurred - The network location cannot be reached

Situation: One of Windows 2003 server can't access other sharing servers. When we tried the following commands, we receive different messages.

C:\Documents and Settings\blin>net view

There are no entries on the list

C:\Documents and Settings\blin>net view \\172.16.215.24
System error 1231 has occurred.

The network location cannot be reached.

C:\Documents and Settings\blin>net use \\172.16.215.24
System error 1231 has occurred.

The network location cannot be reached.

Troubleshooting: when we checked the Properties of the LAN, we found the Client for Microsoft Networks and File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks were disabled. After enabled Client for Microsoft Networks and File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, we can access the remote server. The following are the same command with different results.

C:\Documents and Settings\blin>net view
Server Name Remark

\\chicagotechpc1
The command completed successfully.

C:\Documents and Settings\blin>net view \\172.16.215.24
System error 5 has occurred.

Access is denied. Note: this error is OK because we don't have permission to access it. If we use ths net use as below, we can access it.

C:\Documents and Settings\blin>net use \\172.16.215.24
The password or user name is invalid for \\172.16.215.24.

Enter the user name for '172.16.215.24': blin
Enter the password for 172.16.215.24:
The command completed successfully.
