Troubleshooting Windows is shutting down Case 1: The client has this issue after he removed some applications. We fixed it by downloading and installing User Profile Hive Cleanup Service - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1b286e6d-8912-4e18-b570-42470e2f3582&displaylang=en Case 2: After upgrading Norton, the client can't shutdown the XP with "Windows is shutting down" message. Using Norton removal to remove the Norton and then re-install it. Also please refer to this link: Case 3: The new Dell Netbook has this issue. Try clean boot strategy, found the Dell Wireless Tray cause the problem. Disabling Dell wireless Tray fixed the problem. For more information about clean boot, check this link:
