Can't access remote computer because the Node type is setup Peer-Peer

Q1: I have a laptop with XP2 Home installed. I have a simple home and a simple office network setup that I have been connecting to without problems for several months. I have a cable modem plugged into a router with other computers connected to the router in both home and work network. Suddenly, my computer will not recognize other computers on the network. The network name is Mshome. I have tried uninstalling Microsoft Windows Network and reinstalling. On the network card, I have Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, FQoS Packet Scheduler, Network Monitor Driver, AEGIS Protocal (IEEE 802.1x) v3.1.6.0, NWLink NetBIOS, NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol, Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) installed that has been installed from day one when I got this computer.

I have tried turning the firewall off and on. I can only see my computer on the network.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

A1: Start by simplifying your network stack.  Remove NWLink NetBIOS and
NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol.  Make sure that NetBIOS Over TCP is enabled.

If no improvement, or you don't wish to do the above, provide "browstat
status"  and "ipconfig /all" from each computer, so we can diagnose the problem.

Q2: The following is the ipconfig.txt. Where do I go from here?

A2: The node-type is causing you not to be able to resolve names. ('Peer-Peer' is actually someone at MS's incorrect decoding of the 'P-P',which actually means Point to Point in this context.)  What this actually means is 'use only a WINS server',   which you won't have.

In this case, go to Start | Run | regedit.
Go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parameters

If either of the following values are present, delete them:

NodeType;
DhcpNodeType.
Then re-boot.

This should cause the node type to default correctly.
( the node type will usually report as 'Unknown' in the default case. )
For futher details, see this article:
Default Node Type for Microsoft Clients

Q3: Deleted DhcpNodeType: Problem
solved.............................................................................

Thanks to everyone for your input. Seriously, people like you are saluted!!!
You make this world a better place.

Steve
