Can’t send/receive email to/from outside

Event ID 2114 - Process INETINFO.EXE (PID=1656). Topology Discovery failed, error 0xffffffff.

Event ID 2103 - Process MAD.EXE (PID=2124).

Event ID 7200 - Background thread FDoUpdateCatalog halted on database "First Storage Group\Mailbox Store" due to error code 0x80004005.

Situation: There are two Exchange 2003 servers in this company, Front-end and Back-end. The Front-end also runs GFI spam filter software. Since they install the GFI, they have a problem to send/receive email to/from outside once a while. The internal emails work fine.

Troubleshooting: 1. When that happens, we find all emails sent out stay in the Queue. Restarting Exchange Services on the Bad-end server don’t fix the problem.

2. These are some errors in the Event Viewer of the Front-end server. Event ID 2114 - Process INETINFO.EXE (PID=1656). Topology Discovery failed, error 0xffffffff. Event ID 2103 - Process MAD.EXE (PID=2124). All Global Catalog Servers in use are not responding: Mail.chicagotech.net and Ms-mvps.chicagotech.net. Event ID 7200 - Background thread FDoUpdateCatalog halted on database "First Storage Group\Mailbox Store" due to error code 0x80004005.

3. We can’t restart the Exchange services on Front-end server. The only way we fix the problem is restarting the Front-end server.

4. We contact GFI regarding this issue and they tell us that they just have another new build that should fix the problem. After we install the new build, we don't have that problem any more.
