Your Out of Office settings cannot be displayed, because the server is currently unavailable

One of our clients is running SBS 2008 with SP1. When opening the Outlook internally, every user receives this message: "Your Out of Office settings cannot be displayed, because the server is currently unavailable. Try again later."

1. Test E-mail Autoconfiguration shows correct OOF URL and we can the OOF URL from IE.

2. DNS looks fine on both server and clients. Nslookup doesn't show any issues.

3.

We running exchange 2010 on Windows 2008 R2 and Outlook is 2010. When we open automatically Reply (out of office) in Outlook, we receive this message: “Your automatic settings cannot be displayed because the server is currently unavailable”.

I tried to fix it using Set-ClientAccessServer, Set-WebServicesVirtualDirectory and Set-OABVirtualDirectory, but that doesn’t fix the probelm

However, that doesn’t fix the problem. Any suggestions?

Troubleshooting: The information needed:

1. “Get-MailboxDatabase | fl >c:\mbxdb.txt”
2. “Get-ExchangeCertificate | fl >c:\cert.txt”

3. Certificate error screenshot

4. Test E-Mail AutoConfiguration

Problem:

1. From the screenshot of “Test E-mail AutoConfiguration”, we can see that “Autodiscover” service not work. Because of this, Outlook can’t find Exchange Web service url, so Outlook client can’t set OOF.

2. From the certificate error screenshot, we can see the Exchange using mail.ny.org, however, the certificate shows www.ny.org.

3.  From your original description, we can see that your CAS server FQDN is: srvr.ny.local, but Autodiscover service uri is pointed to https://mail.ny.org/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml. Although, the certificate contains “mail.ny.org”, but the “autodiscover.xml” can’t be found. So Autodiscover not work.

Note: Outlook 2003 doesn’t use Autodiscover, so Outlook 2003 works well.

By default, this URL references the internal FQDN of the CAS that is present when Autodiscover is installed. For example, the following URL is set:
https://servername.contoso.local/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml

In this example, the FQDN references the internal namespace. Generally, this namespace differs from the externally-accessible namespace, such as mail.ny.org.

Resolution:

Generally, when we enable Outlook Anywhere and External host name is "mail.domain.com" and Internal CAS FQDN is "server.domain.local", we will set some service InternalUrl and ExternalUrl as following:

InternalUrl: https://server.domain.local/...

ExternalUrl: https://mail.domain.com/...

For example, Exchange Web Service: -InternalUrl "https://server.domain.local/ews" -ExternalUrl "https://mail.domain.com/ews"

if you don't use OWA from the INternet, you change all these urls pointed to “nyrpsrvr.nyrp.local”, for example, change AutodiscoverServiceUri to https://nyrpsrvr.nyrp.local/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml , change WebServicesVritualDirectory InternalUrl to https://nyrpsrvr.nyrp.local/ews and so on, Autodiscover will work again and OOF issue will also be resolved.

Or add a DNS record point the Exchange CAS Internal IP address to external FQDN.

If you use OWA from the Internet, make sure the URL is work and OWA works.
