Chicago Area Laptop for rent: $35 per day plus $10 for additional day
rental

Server restarting every night at 3am

Q: I am running SBS 2003, with SP1. The daily report says the system has restarted and always at the same time
and always the sme error:

MSExchangeDSAccess 2102 7/12/2006 3:04 AM 1
Process MAD.EXE (PID=3128). All Domain Controller Servers in use are not
responding: hansenhousesbs.CandDHServices.local For more information, click

MSExchangeDSAccess 2104 7/12/2006 3:04 AM 1
Process STORE.EXE (PID=2296). All the DS Servers in domain are not
responding. For more information, click
http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp

Other than these restarts the system works great. I have looked these errors
up on MS site and they are not descriptive, or refer to Exchange 2000.
Please assist. I don't want this to continue or worsen. This is a fresh
install, been up for almost two months. This behavior just started last week.
No changes have been made.

A1: I would check any programs running at that time, for example backup and auto update.

A2: Sounds to me like automatic updates are trying to install. KB917537 is an
IIS update that on most systems will not install until you manually stop IIS
admin and then install it. So if your system is set to automatically install
then reboot, this will happen every night due to the failure of the above
update.

So the thing to do is do a manual Microsoft Update today after stopping IIS
first. Or uncheck install updates / reboot until you can do it manually.

That should do it. Why the DSAccess error, I'm not sure other than to say
the system is not shutting down or restarting properly or there is a domain
controller that the server can't contact because the same thing is happening
to that one too.

A3: Likely spot on the Microsoft Update. The DSAccess error is very common on
SBS and other single DC's with Exchange installed environments. Exchange is
just starting up before AD is ready to provide services.
