Windows 2008 WINS Issue

By default, WINS and Computer browser service are disabled in the Windows 2008. If for some reaons, you need to install WINS, go to features under Server Manager to add WINS as feature. Also remember to setup Computer Browser start automatically. If you don't run Computer Browser with WINS, you may experience some of listed issues..

Case 1: In windows 2008 domain environment, browstat status display the following message:

Status for domain NTDOMAIN on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{75510F78-C7A2-4DD8-

87CE-90DA3D8D4D66}

Browsing is NOT active on domain.

Master name cannot be determined from GetAdapterStatus.

Case 2: You may receive System error 6118 when running net view:

net view

System error 6118 has occurred.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available

Case 3: You may receive event ID 8021 and 8032

Event Type: Error

Event Source: BROWSER

Event Category: None

Event ID: 8032

Description:

The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many times on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{D7557C3F-49E8-43E4-83ED-4EE99DE5CB2D}. The backup browser is stopping.

Event ID: 8021

Description:
The browser service was unable to retrieve a list of servers from the browser master \\2003TS1 on the network \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{D7557C3F-49E8-43E4-83ED-4EE99DE5CB2D}.

Network: \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{D7557C3F-49E8-43E4-83ED-4EE99DE5CB2D}

This event may be caused by a temporary loss of network connectivity. If this message appears again, verify that the server is still connected to the network. The return code is in the Data text box.

Case 4: The WINS Active Registrations displays a member server as MSBROSWER (in our example, 10.0.0.18 is Master Browser and the 10.0.0.12 is a member server).
