Case Study - Event ID 6702: DNS server has updated its own host (A) records

Situation: the client reported that their SBS 2003 (also DNS server) received Event Viewer ID 6702 with message “DNS server has updated its own host (A) records” after they modified the DNS settings and rebooted the server.

Troubleshooting: 1. The clients logon without any problems.

2. They can receive email and access the Internet.

3. Use nslookup to check the DNS status and it is OK.

Problem and resolution: ipconfig /all displays the server was assign two DNS IP addresses, one is the SBS IP and another is their ISP DNS IP. They received this Event ID because the server tried to register its own host (A) record to the ISP DNS. Removing the ISP IP from the server TCP/IP fixed the problem.
