TCP/IP Fatal Error
on win9x
When running ping or winipcfg, you may receive "Fatal Error" message.
Solutions: 1) make sure TCP/IP is installed and bound; 2) At the command
prompt, run
c:\windows\ws2bakup\ws2bakup.bat; 3) remove and reinstall the TCP/IP stack
(refer to MS Q286748).
Troubleshooting User.exe errors
In general, User.exe errors can be blamed to video related problems. In
some cases its due to drivers not being up to date. Other times it is caused
from having a video mode of more than 256 colors. If you get a lot of user.exe
errors, try changing the video mode for number of colors to 256 or some other
value. The 32-bit mode or true-color mode can cause this problem.
Why win9x
cannot see a printer
Win 2000 can see the print name or folder name but win9x cannot because the
name of the printer or folder is too long (more than 12 characters).
Win9x
can't browse Entire Network
If you setup your network correct in win9x, you should be able to browse
and see the computer in Entire network. If not, check 1) have you installed
File and Printer Sharing? 2) Have you installed a NIC? 3) if the Master
Browser is disabled?
Win9x logon password
issues
Q: When I use Domain Security Policy to enforce periodic password change
for all users, W9x users would be prompted to change their netlogon password
when the time comes to change, but the Windows logon password doesn't get
changed as well. Is there a way to get the Windows logon password to change
together with the domain passwords without doing it manually?
A: When you logon win9x on a domain network at the first time, you have an
option to setup win9x password which is saved under windows folder. To avoid
changing win9x password later, you should keep the windows password blank.
Otherwise, whenever you change the domain password, you also need to change
the windows password. Z: is currently
\\srv1\netlogon.
The local drive name z: is
already in use
Q: When logging on and running the logon.bat, win2k clients work fine but
the win98 clients get this message: "c:\windows>net use z:
\\domain\apps. z: is currently
\\srv1\netlogon. The local drive name z: is
already in use". After press Yes to continue, windows explorer does not show
z: drive. If mapping z: \domain\apps manually, it work. Why?
A: Z: drive is reserved as search drive for netlogon in win9x. So, choose
another drive.
