You can establish the VPN using XP but Vista

• 732 Your computer and the remote computer could not agree on PPP control protocols.
• 718 The connection timed out waiting for a valid response from the remote computer
• 734 The PPP link control protocol was terminated
• 736 The remote computer terminated the control protocol
• 919 The connection could not be established because the authentication protocol used by the RAS/VPN server to verify your username and password could not be matched with the settings in your connection profile

Situation: If you can establish the VPN using XP but Vista, it could be the MS-CHAP issue.

If the Vista VPN receives these error codes, It could be the MS-CHAP issue.

• 732 Your computer and the remote computer could not agree on PPP control protocols.
• 718 The connection timed out waiting for a valis response from the remote computer
• 734 The PPP link control protocol was terminated
• 736 The remote computer terminated the control protocol
• 919 The connection could not be established because the authentication protocol used by the RAS/VPN server to verify your username and password could not be matched with the settings in your connection profile

By default, Windows Vista uses to MS-CHAPv2.  If your server is configured to accept connections only using MS-CHAPv1 as the authentication method, then Windows Vista clients will be unable to connect to your server.

Resolutions:

1. Configure the VPN server to allow clients to connect with MS-CHAPv2 as the authentication method.
