Troubleshooting Windows Time Issues and Tools

  1. Use net time /querysntp command to check the NTP server on the DC and workstation. Also refer to this link: Why does my DC PC query time.windows.com instead of DC
  2. Use w32tm /resync command to check if you can synchronize with the DC.
  3. Use w32tm /monitor /domain:domianname command to check the status of  DC time sources. Also refer to this issue: Computer did not resynchronize because no time data was available
  4. Use net time /domain:domainname /set /y or net time %logonserver% /set /y commands to check if you can synchronize the time with time source.
  5. Make sure 'Type' In the right panel  of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters iss Nt5DS which is default and will synchronize to domain hierarchy.
  6. Make sure the Windows Time service (w32time) is running and set to
    automatic startup on the server and clients.
  7. If you are running Windows 2003 server and have an issue, you may want to check this hotfix: Time synchronization does not occur on an NTP provider on a Windows Server 2003-based computer http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=832261
  8. Use net time command to check which DC the client synchronizes its time.
