Event ID 1029 - The service principal name for the VMRC server could not be registered. Automatic authentication will always use NTLM authentication. Error 0x80072098 - Insufficient access rights to perform the operation.

This is authentication issue. By default, Virtual Server runs under in via " NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE ". In the most cases, it works fine until you update security patch or load third party security software. Also, if you just change a user’s password and you have assigned the user account to manage the Virtual Machine, you may receive this error.

Resolutions:

  1. Make sure the username and password assigned to the Virtual Machine Configuration are correct and have administrator rights. If not, re-enter the correct password.
  2. Makes sure the logon account on Virtual Server service have the credentials needed to create for the server principle names. You may try to assign System account as the logon account.
  3. If above two solutions don’t fix the problem, you may want to re-set application-specific permission. To do this, go to Administrative Tools>Component Services>Console Root>Computers>My Computer>DCOM Config>Virtual Server, right-click property and under Identity tab select "This user" radio button and fill-in the Administrator account and the password. Restart Virtual Server service
