Verify you have correct WINS settings.

  1. Configure each WINS server as its own primary WINS server.
  2. Each WINS server must register its own set of unique names and group NetBIOS names in WINS.
  3. You must configure WINS replication correctly to have an efficient WINS-capable network.
  4. Verify that there is a good connection between WINS servers.
  5. Also make sure that TCP port 42 is not blocked on an intervening network device, such as a router or a firewall.
Note: 1. In a large WINS environment where IP addresses constantly change, do not configure the Replicate on Address change option on an NT4 WINS server. The equivalent setting on a Windows 2000 WINS server is the When address changes check box in the WINS snap-in. Click to clear the check box to restore the default setting.
